AIANH will host its June chapter meeting at Beth Israel Lahey Health Exeter Hospital's award-winning building, Falzone Center for Cancer Care. We will hear from the design team and tour this facility. Nestled within existing landscaped courtyards and serving some of Exeter Hospitals’ most sensitive patients, this Cancer Center expansion project connects the mind, body and spirit to holistically leverage the healing powers of Nature. The new addition will be accessed from the existing 4-story entry rotunda through a new 1-story glass connector, which compresses the view outward to landscaped courtyards flanking either side. Curved forms in the architecture embrace both patient journey and the adjacent landscape.
Members will have time to socialize and network before the presentation and tour.
After the event, we can head into downtown Exeter for some refreshments.

United Therapeutics renovated its R&D facility in Manchester, NH, transforming a historic 1897 timber building by the Merrimack River from a tannery into a cutting-edge hub for 3D-printed lung transplants. The 98,000 SF renovation, part of a multi-stage project, revitalized the south portion of the first two floors and the entire third and fourth floors, featuring labs, corporate offices, and amenities. Inspired by the site’s industrial past and natural surroundings, the design integrates natural materials, greenery, and river views, enhancing indoor-outdoor connections with ample natural light. The workspace blends modern and industrial aesthetics, preserving the building’s history with exposed masonry walls, timber ceilings, and original mill equipment as sculptures. The renovation includes labs, collaborative workspaces, and amenities like a gym, wellness room, and a café that converts into a town hall space, with custom lighting and angular partitions adding dynamism and flexibility.

2025 High School Design Challenge
2025 Challenge: We Need Housing!
All NH High School Students are welcome to participate in this fun, impactful design challenge.
Develop new skills and to learn about the various aspects of planning and design.
Propose innovative solutions to a problem seen across communities in America!
New Hampshire has a shortage of housing for all demographics, but particularly young individuals and families. The housing supply is limited but housing demand is on the rise, making it more expensive than ever to buy and even rent a home. And on top of that, global warming and the cost of utilities has made it more expensive to build, maintain and operate a home. We can’t afford to keep eliminating natural resources and habitats. Our environment is critical to helping offset global warming. Our forests and landscapes need to be preserved. So, what can we do?
This year’s challenge is to develop Phase I of a small community, or neighborhood, with the goals of affordability, sustainability, and livability. This concept has been around for decades; sometimes referred to as “Cohousing”. Create a place where people can share resources, share spaces, socialize, feel safe, work together, live together, thrive together.
Design projects will be reviewed by a panel of architects and/or emerging design professionals.
Winning projects will be awarded cash prizes ($500-1,000).
Participation Requirements:
Every participant must be a current high school student in the state of New Hampshire or any high school student who is a resident of New Hampshire. Students may work individually or in teams. Teams may not consist of more than three students.
Students are registered by their instructors or a school mentor who will oversee the student project.
Deadlines:
January 10 - Register for the challenge
January 13 - Students may begin working on the challenge
March 14 - Project submissions are due
April tbd - Awards event (details forthcoming)
For all the details on the challenge and how to register, please download this Design Challenge Brief.

ASHRAE Presents: Health as a Building Performance Metric
Friend of AIANH Event
Health as a Building Performance Metric
Presenter: Stephanie Taylor, M.D., M. Arch
Host: ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers)
1 AIA HSW
Our health is our number one resource, yet current building codes tend to focus on regulating energy consumption and averting catastrophic building events such as fires. This presentation shows research and science supporting the relationship between building design and occupant health, not just comfort, providing sound evidence for the importance of indoor air quality in residential, academic and commercial buildings. IAQ which supports optimal health and productivity for all people decreases job absenteeism, improves student learning and lightens the financial and human burden of chronic illness and acute infectious disease.
Active participation from the audience will be requested throughout the presentation as Dr. Taylor communicates medical and scientific information in a clear and sometimes humorous fashion, leaving the audience excited about the value of building design and maintenance in preserving health. They will also have clear take-away strategies to manage their own surroundings to improve their health and productivity.

COURSES
Design for Resilience
Presenter
Kira Gould, Hon. AIA, Kira Gould CONNECT
speaker bio
Kira Gould is a communications professional with 35 years of experience in the industry. In this session, she will address the health, safety, and welfare aspects of design practice. She will address how design professionals and firms refine and raise their voices, making advocacy a part of practice. She will discuss how firms can define value frameworks with their clients as part of the move toward fully integrating sustainability and resilience and social response into both design process and outcomes. She will explore nascent concepts, including sufficiency, as inherent to design thinking in an era of stewardship and climate response. She will also talk about the growth in the reuse market and how practitioners can lean in to this arena -- and find ways to quantify its benefits to clients and communities.
Water: Resilience through Design
Presenters
Diantha S. Korzun, AIA, LEED AP, gbA Architecture and Planning
Jean Caroon, FAIA , LEED Fellow, Goody Clancy
Alyssa M. Murphy, AIA, LEED AP, LFA, Placework
speaker bios
Freshwater, critical to life and wellbeing, is a finite resource in growing demand. As the global population increases and resource-intensive economic development continues, water scarcity is accelerating. As climate change puts more stress on water resources and we increasingly feel the effects of sea level rise, storms and flooding, design must respond. Case studies will be presented that highlight the role of water in regional design for resilience. The goal of the session is to inform and inspire, while daylighting hidden and far-reaching consequences of our current practices.
The power’s out: energy resilience and thermal autonomy frameworks for more resilient buildings
Presenter
Nick Swedberg, AIA, WELL, LEED AP, BECxP, ARUP
speaker bio
At its core, resilience is the ability of a system to reduce the impact of shocks and stresses and the system’s companion capacity to anticipate, absorb, and recover from these adverse events. In the context of buildings, a loss of power, especially during an extreme weather event, represents a significant system shock that can put the health, safety, and well-being of occupants at risk.
In this session, attendees will be introduced to an energy resilience framework in order to identify actions at the building scale that can help promote safer and more secure energy access. Attendees will also learn about the concept of thermal autonomy and how architectural design can support the provisioning of thermal autonomy to enhance the passive survivability of assets when secure power is unavailable.
AIA Resilience Design Toolkit
Presenter
Sammy Shams, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP, HKS
speaker bio
Resilience design strategies play a crucial role in establishing secure, adaptable, healthy, and sustainable communities. The AIA Resilience Design Toolkit, developed with assistance by HKS, assists architects in integrating resilience studies into their projects. This course will provide an overview on how to use the toolkit’s five-step process including financial evaluation of resilience design strategies, followed by recent case studies. By quantifying the costs and benefits, architects can make a compelling case for resilience design, ensuring alignment of client expectations and design intentions. The toolkit’s approach fosters high-performance buildings that can withstand future challenges. In the ever-evolving landscape of architectural practice, understanding and incorporating resilience design principles have become imperative. Participants will learn how to identify hazards, develop resilience strategies, and integrate them seamlessly into their architectural projects, fostering a holistic approach to design.
Reporting and Optimizing Embodied Carbon
Presenter:
Doug Shilo, AIA, LEED AP BD + C, Lavallee Brensinger Architects
speaker bio
Demand is mounting to reduce our carbon emissions. The majority of this demand has focused on operational carbon, as we continue to push for ever-higher performance in our buildings. However, the impact of embodied carbon is coming into focus, and we must also push for lower impact during construction. This course uses case studies to show how we get the full picture.
